For the first time in our country's National Health Policy, emergency medical care is being included as part of the agenda for the 12th Five Year Plan. The final draft document has been completed and due for presentation at the coming Parliament session by the Health Minister.
Dr. Suresh David, Professor & Head of the Emergency Department at Christian Medical College Vellore is one of the many members of the Task Force which has compiled the document over 5 sessions at Nirman Bhavan, in New Delhi. The document has guidelines for EMS, emergency medicine departments for District hospitals, triage guidelines and curriculum for emergency medical technicians (ambulance paramedics).
This is an important milestone in the development of emergency medicine specialty in our country. More details will follow as news comes in.
