Basic Life Support (BLS)

Basic Life Support course teaches a layperson about the initial assessment and resuscitation of a victim in cardiac arrest.

This is a 8 hour workshop for any healthcare providers like police, firemen, doctors, nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, firstaid volunteers, non-medical personnel, etc.

The workshop includes the following:

• Audio-visual demos
• Hands on experience using manikins
• Use of AMBU bags for rescue breathing
• Use of automated defibrillators
• Technique of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Every candidate is assessed at the end using multiple choice questions (MCQs) test and skill stations.

If the candidate adequately demonstrates the required skills then he / she is awarded a BLS certificate from AHA (American Heart Association).

Fees for the course is Rs:1250/-

BLS course must be completed before taking up ACLS course.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

ACLS is a 2 day workshop that teaches medical personnel the advanced resuscitation techniques in cardiac arrest. These include the following:

• Airway management techniques including intubation and ventilation
• Use of drugs like adrenaline and atropine
• Use of defibrillators and trans-cutaneous pacing
• Identification of cardiac rhythms and their management
• Audio-visual demos
• Skill stations
• Scenario based teaching

It is mandatory to have a BLS (Basic Life Support) certification to be eligible to enroll for ACLS course.

Fees for ACLS course is Rs:5500/-

ACLS certification is mandatory for all healthcare providers working in critical care units and emergency departments.

As of August 2006, three institutes in India have AHA certified BLS and ACLS courses

• Apollo Hospital Enterprises Limited
• St. John's Medical College Hospital, Bangalore
• Symbiosis Centre for Health Care, Pune
